Recent CT Prison Trends

  • On September 1st, 2008, the CT Department of Corrections (DOC) reported the total prison population at 19,552, a 0.1% increase over August 1st, 2008 figure. This is the second increase in the total prison population since February 1st, 2008.
  • The increase in the prison population is due to several factors including seasonal variations, a significant rise in the population of unsentenced offenders and a backlog in the number of inmates who were not released because of changes in the parole process.
  • Total admissions to DOC facilities decreased by 12% from July (3,224) to August (2,828). The number of offenders with new sentences (385) decreased by 10% and the number of accused/unsentenced offenders (2,080) decreased by 14%. Between July and August the number of offenders returned to prison from community release decreased from 274 to 254.
